New site feed, in case you missed it

In case you missed our switch to the new site and new feed, here's a link to our new feed and our new site:

New site:  www.studenttabletpc.com
New Feed:  http://www.studenttabletpc.com/index.xml

Please Join us at the New Site!

NEW SITE LINK:
www.studenttabletpc.com

I think *cross fingers* that I have the new site constructed enough to make it the active site. There are still many things I want/need to do (such as moving some of the side bar stuff over and some images), but it's at a point I don't think we're losing anything major by switching.

Additionally, I haven't worked out the multiple author posting, so all posts made by Trevor will be posted through me with his name in the post.

Please submit all comments and trackbacks to the new site. I can transfer them pretty easily, but it saves me some effort if we can just keep from posting anything here.

This is really exciting! The freedom we have now to customize the site to our needs is enormous and I think the semi-final product (these things never stop changing) will be leaps and bounds ahead of where we are now!

As always, comments, suggestions, and questions about the new site are welcomed and encouraged. I'll make a post on www.studenttabletpc.com specifically for you to vent your reactions and ideas.

Thanks!

(Take me to the new site----->)

STPC on the Move

We've grown kinda big here at The Student Tablet PC. Over 200 articles and over 750 comments, with most of those articles and comments swamped and hidden in a mass of poor organization. I know it, because sometime I have trouble finding things that I know are there.

The original intent of The Student Tablet PC was to be a website, but we went with a blog format because it was easy to set up, easy to slowly add on to, and easy to keep up with what was updated. Since then, we've turned into a mix of news updates, how-to articles, and reviews, and we need a site that gives us more freedom to do what we want with our information we offer. Long story short, we're moving up to Movable Type.

We already have a domain name and host we've been using for our forums, so it's a fairly easy switch. For those looking for a host, iPowerWeb offers a lot for a great price in a professional manner. With any switch, however, there may be some downtime and weird stuff going on. Right now www.studenttabletpc.com goes to the new blog, so just use http://studenttabletpc.blogs.com (I think most links to us use this link so the effects should be minimal).

And don't worry, everything here will be transferred and we'll try to keep any links from being busted.

Thanks for your patience ^_^.

Acrobat Commenting

I was speaking with Eric Mack and he mentioned his search for a program which kept track of what you highlighted. It didn't dawn on me until then that Acrobat may be an answer (though not ideal).

If you've used Adobe Acrobat 7.0 before, you likely know that you can mark-up your PDF files by highlighting text, underlining text, and adding comments. By selecting a commenting option and using the comment list/summary, you can give yourself a list of every word you mark up.

More details after the jump.

Forum Mod: Image Upload

I've been playing with mods on our forum and I actually got a useful one working! Anyone registered can now upload images to any post, and up to 20 at a time. This should be useful sharing images of tablets, notes, set-ups, accessories, etc.

One other small mod is you can now select from a pre-loaded gallery of avatars (the little pictures under your screenname), including a bunch of tablets ^_^.

Enjoy!

Oh, why not. I'll go paperless too

Alright, for the past three semesters I've told myself I was going paperless, but I always end up with mounds of papers and books because I never fully try.

While Eric Mack is doing his 8-Week challenge, I'll be joining him, since 8 weeks from now would put me at my last final and that just makes good timing.

Currently I have two books I use all the time that aren't scanned in I need to do, plus I need to get my files organized and paper files scanned and put away for good. Luckily this weekend shouldn't be too busy with studying, so I have some time. All I'm allowing paper for is printing homework and taking pop-quizzes. Oh yeah, and physics lab and because there's a bunch of things that could knock the tablet off the table or scratch the surface.

Anyway, my desk is MESSY right now. That needs to be fixed.

Feel free to join Eric and me on our challenge! We can help each other out getting it down to a science ^_^.

Three New Links

Three new links were added to our Links to Enjoy today:

  1. Rob Bushway's Blog - I'm sorry, Rob. No idea how I missed it. I've read every post for a long time now.
  2. The Paperless Student - A student blog on using technology in the classroom at the University of Washington.
  3. Simulacrum - another student, Michael, (a first year PhD student in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media) posting about his tablet experience. There's already a five month archive but I just stumbled upon it the other day. We'll overlook the fact he goes by "ougrad" (hook 'em).

I find a bunch interesting sites by surfing our referrals to see if there's anything going on (anyone notice we had a brief Scoble appearance? Thanks, Scoble). If you have a site or you know a site, leave us a note (comment or e-mail) about it so we can check it out!

How's It Going? and Where the Hell Have I Been?

Hello there?

Who am I, you ask? Yes, I certainly admit to being AWOL for the last xx months. Everytime I think I'll have more time to contribute to this site, I don't. Well, I'm setting some priorities straight. I logged into the Buzz today and realized I hadn't visited in over two weeks. There's something wrong with my life if I don't have time to even check in on the community in two weeks.

So what's been keeping me busy?

It Came! M200 Finally back from Toshiba

Toshiba_itshere

OK, since this is the first time I've had a chance to breath in the last 48 hours, I'm finally getting around to posting this (I told you it was a busy week).

Yesterday around 11 AM Central, my tablet arrived at my house. I'll admit to skipping physics so I could get home sooner.

Aside from all the hassle this whole ordeal was, I'd have to say it turned out alright. Not only did I get a brand new tablet back (we'll disregard that I sent them a new tablet in the first place), but I also got the things that come with a new tablet, such as another power cord and another pen. Another surprise was I now have a 60 GB harddrive when the original had 40 GB, and also, when I went to put in my new 1 GB stick of RAM (OK, I bought it a month ago), I found one 512 MB stick instead of the 2 x 256 MB I started off with. My computer is dang fast right now.

Thank you to everyone who commented, sent an e-mail to me, sent an e-mail notifying someone else, or actually facilitated the return of my tablet. I feel complete again with my computer at hand, and it's easy to see I'm part of a great community.

Toshiba_thanks

And just as a little funny: I saved this sticker. It made me smile (can you guess why?).

Reflection on the Past 36 Days

I was going to wait until later to post this, but Lalit got me writing with his comment so I figured I'd just make the post now.

Had this thought for the past few days and wanted to throw it out there.
The frustration of not having your convertible for quite a while now has led you to post quite a bit and you've been using a slate:-)

Just wondering how you're finding getting accustomed to the slate?

GoBinder 2006 Public Beta!

Get ready, it's almost here. In the next 48 hours the GoBinder 2006 Public Beta will be released and I'm impressed with the work these guys have put in to it. I also haven't checked out the private beta since the last release a month ago, so I'm just as interested to see what's new as the next person.

After a lot of hard work, and contributions from a lot of people, GoBinder 2006 is about to become a Public Beta!  Within the next 48 hours, we will be releasing the first Public Beta of GoBinder 2006.  If you want to test, please keep your eyes on this forum as we will post a link where you can download the latest build and begin to test. - GoBinder Forums

Yet another busy week

Hey, everyone. This is yet another busy week for me, so don't expect too much post-wise. It's technically pretty normal (just one test) but I hardly got any homework done this past week because of all the Toshiba stuff on my mind. Fun fun. Hopefully they'll fax me the papers soon so I can get my new tablet without any more delay. A Friday arrival would be really nice.

Trev? You alive still? Just checkin'.

(BTW, 46 days and counting until our site's 1-year anniversary. What are we doing to celebrate? I guess you'll just have to wait and see ;-) )
